Language Disorders

Building understanding and expression skills for confident communication in everyday situations

Some children have trouble understanding what others say or expressing their own thoughts clearly. This is called a language disorder, and it can affect how a child listens, talks, learns new words, forms sentences, or follows directions.

Language includes many different skills, such as:

  • Sound patterns (like rhyming or breaking words apart)
  • Word parts (like adding -ed or -ing)
  • Grammar and sentence structure
  • Vocabulary and meaning
  • Social language (perspective taking, understanding the "unwritten" rules of social interactions, advocating for their own unique communication style)

A language disorder may show up on its own or alongside other diagnoses, such as autism or ADHD. It can also look different as a child grows.

Therapy helps build your child's ability to understand and use language more confidently in everyday situations — at home, at school, and with friends.
